Marine Surveying

My goal is to provide my client with sufficent information about the condition, safety, value, and performance of a particular vessel through objective accurate assessment so that he may make a well-informed decision or plan-of-action.  The key, particularly when it involves a purchase decision, is in evaluating the vessel in terms of its suitability for the intended use.  A written report includes a well-organized, thorough description of the vessel, her engines, systems, and equipment including content which is consistent with industry practice and SAMS guidelines.  My emphasis is on the safety and structure of the vessel, but can be tailored to suit the client's needs.  Observations as to condition are reported as findings and discrepancies, based on regulatory and voluntary industry standards.  Surveys are completed using as reference the federal regulations and amendments issued and enforced by the United States Coast Guard under the authority of Title 33 and Title 46 of the United States Code of Federal Regulations (CFR's). In addition the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA-302) voluntary standards are used as reference. These ABYC and NFPA voluntary standard practices are generally followed by most vessel manufacturers today.  Finally, a list of recommendations is based on my wide-ranging experience with the construction, operation, and maintenance of both fine yachts and commercial vessels.  Digital photos are included, of course, and a wide range of specialty services are offered, including fluid analysis, digital thermography, and drive train evaluation, among others.

TYPES OF MARINE SURVEYS

MARINE SURVEYS ARE PERFORMED FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS AND THE PROCEDURES FOR EACH VARIES TO BEST SUIT YOUR NEEDS.

PRE-PURCHASE SURVEY
This is the most comprehensive type of inspection, and is strongly advised when purchasing a new or used vessel.  Condition and the overall operation of the vessel should be examined. This includes such items as structural integrity, out of water inspection, sea trial, electrical systems, propulsion system, fuel system, machinery, navigation, misc. on board systems, cosmetic appearance, electronics,

and overall maintenance.

INSURANCE SURVEY
This inspection is performed so that the insurance company can determine whether or not the vessel is an acceptable risk. They are interested in structural integrity and safety for its intended use. Most insurance companies require a survey on older boats. They will also want to know the vessels fair market value.

APPRAISAL INSPECTION
This inspection is performed to gather enough information to justify or determine the fair market value of the vessel. This is normally needed for financing, estate settlements, donations, and legal cases.

 DAMAGE INSPECTION
This is performed to assess the extent of damage, recommend repairs, estimate repair cost, and if requested, the probable cause.
